Child me
I wrote an after - a powerful Jennae Cecelia poem that I absolutely adore
I went for coffee with my younger self after @jennaececelia on Instagram I went for coffee with my younger self I was there, fully Feeling Earth beneath my feet My eyes shone Lit up when I saw her Like for those I love the most Didn’t feel I could do that for me She told me that she felt lonely That they thought she was vacant but, whirring, spinning, drilling Far from empty, on the inside They praised her for her smartness The little voice told me she needed cuddles and craved reassurance To be seen for her heart Because that’s what will teach her to thrive I saw her legs hanging down Small and vulnerable, on the chair But, she wrapped her fingers round the cup, like I did She seemed so glad of our one on one time Nervous, cautious, but I smiled and she was happy to be there She saw the cheekiness The rebel soul That never left when I grew up And I told her she’d always be more than huge smile and big teeth (became tits too later) You don’t have to reach for the weeds of pretty You’ll forever, into eternity, be enough Wading through tall grasses You don’t get attention through bowing down to people Or trying to be sweet You are more beautiful, and sweet and gentle, if anything, When you feel connected and don’t need to try Try to let all you can, release She shook and trembled as she leaned forward and, with a confidence, Could take my hand Weeping as I put my arms around her This moment would drain into our psyche Not trauma, like trickling sand There are moments you’ll remember When you heard that someone talked about your honesty Or when someone implied you are important too In this moment, as I re-play and re-configure it I want to, perfectly, imperfectly Be with you Wipe your cheeks when you feel like drowning But, never ask you to stop Give my chest and my shoulder Your small body curved into me I will wrap you Warm and soft Envelop the feelings That will stay with you all your life Because when you know what the truth is And someone tells you you’re a loser You’ll know what’s wrong and truth was fed by my arms And softness with you Tides and waves to wade through But we know where the core of me stands We know You know, what is right

You’re a ray of sunshine Maybe, I’m the perfect storm You see love radiating into you and wonder Eyes lighting up when they see you Since the first day you were born Maybe I shake things up a bit Show things, open eyes That were scrunched up Hunched up Lightning that’s horrific and blinding You raise hand to head
